Aurora Borealis Nov-Dec 2001

A severe geomagnetic storm lightened skies 5-7 Nov. Our weather allowed observations only for a few morning hours on night 5/6, but even this convinced me that it was inevitably the reddest and brightest display that I had ever seen. Gibbous moon high in Gemini (notice Jupiter next to it) was first thought to ruin some of the phototography, but as you can see aurora was so strong that it could be shot directly against the moon. Never experienced anything like this! This was also the first case in scanning pictures, when I really had to reduce saturation of red; usually it is vice versa.
