Year 2002 was not too spectacular in regard NLC-observing. Weather was pretty normal and there was an average number of clear nights, but still no more than 13 positive (and 10 negative) observations were made; none of these was too spectacular a display. Images extending to vy18722 are from summer 2002.
Summer 2003 has been exceptional in regard NLC sightings; total of 32 positive (and 7 negative) sightings did I get. However, observing has been more intense in 2003 and "an unbiased estimate" - with respect to a normal year - of NLC sightings might be somewhere between 24-28. As usually most of these 32 cases were pretty faint and of small extent, but one on 1/2 Aug was spectacular (images vy20533 - vy20724). In 2003 NLCs were frequently seen 'til the middle of Aug, which is a bit unusual.
